Directionless vection: A new illusory self-motion perception

چکیده
We report a new visual illusion, "directionless vection." When expanding and contracting optic flows are simultaneously presented in the same depth plane, observers can perceive illusory self-motion (vection) without direction.

Hunger enhances vertical vection.
Hunger was found to facilitate visually induced illusory upward and downward self-motions (vertical vection), but not illusory self-motion in depth (vection in depth). We propose that the origin of this hunger effect lies in the possibility that vertical self-motions (both real and illusory) are more likely to induce changes in visceral state.
متن کاملVection induced by illusory motion in a stationary image.
Ilusory self-motion (vection) can be induced by large areas of visual motion stimulation. Here we demonstrate for the first time that illusory expansion can induce vection in the absence of any physical display motion.
متن کاملCritical role of foreground stimuli in perceiving visually induced self-motion (vection).
The effects of a foreground stimulus on vection (illusory perception of self-motion induced by a moving background stimulus) were examined in two experiments. The experiments reveal that the presentation of a foreground pattern with a moving background stimulus may affect vection. The foreground stimulus facilitated vection strength when it remained stationary or moved slowly in the opposite di...
متن کاملMore than a cool illusion? Functional significance of self-motion illusion (circular vection) for perspective switches
Self-motion can facilitate perspective switches and "automatic spatial updating" and help reduce disorientation in applications like virtual reality (VR). However, providing physical motion through moving-base motion simulators or free-space walking areas comes with high cost and technical complexity. This study provides first evidence that merely experiencing an embodied illusion of self-motio...
متن کاملA comparison of the latencies of visually induced postural change and self-motion perception.
This study compared the latencies of visually induced postural change and self-motion perception under identical visual conditions. The results showed that a visual roll stimulus elicits postural tilt in the direction of scene motion and an increase in postural instability several seconds before the subject begins to perceive illusory self-motion (vection) in the opposite direction. Postural an...
